Five Things Working for a Small Business Has Taught Me
Now that summer is here, I’ve been spending more time in the mountains around Fort Collins reflecting on what working for a small business has taught me and how much I’ve grown.
Working in customer outreach at Simpalo Snacks has given me experiences I don’t think I would have found anywhere else. Looking back, five things stand out most.
1. Teamwork Really Means Everyone Pitches In
It may sound cliché, but in a small business there truly is no “that’s not my job” mentality.
Each person brings their own strengths, but when deadlines hit or extra hands are needed, everyone steps in. Watching people support one another and work toward a shared goal has taught me flexibility, humility, and what it means to be part of a team.

2. Culture Feels Personal
One of the things I value most is that we genuinely care about one another.
We celebrate wins, support each other through challenges, and share parts of life beyond work, including families, milestones, and everyday moments. That connection creates a workplace that feels human and meaningful.
3. I’ve Learned More Skills Than I Ever Expected
Coming from a Social Work background, I knew very little about how a business operates.
Working for Simpalo has stretched me in unexpected ways, from building a stronger business mindset to becoming more comfortable with technology, marketing, and finances. Wearing multiple hats has helped me grow professionally and personally.
4. Relationships Matter
One of the most rewarding parts of working for a small business like Simpalo is getting to know our customers.
Over time, you recognize names, learn preferences and dietary needs, and understand what matters to them. Those relationships make the work more meaningful and remind me that business is ultimately about people.
5. The Small Moments Stay With You
One thing that continues to surprise me is how thoughtful customers can be. Whether they’re purchasing snacks for their office team, celebrating achievements, introducing new prospects, or choosing a gift for a loved one during the holidays, I’m reminded how kind and generous people are. Working at a small business like Simpalo lets me experience that mission firsthand and share it with the whole team.
Working for a small business has shown me that growth doesn’t always come from titles or promotions. Sometimes it comes from teamwork, relationships, learning new things, and being part of something personal.
